Sugar-Coated Yeast Pastries

Ingredients

For the dough:

  • 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) instant yeast
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ cup (60ml) warm water
  • ¾ cup (180ml) warm milk (not hot)
  • ¼ cup (60g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg

For the coating:

  • ½ cup (100g) sugar
  • 2 tbsp cinnamon (optional, for flavor)
  • ¼ cup (60g) melted butter

★Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough:
    • In a bowl, mix warm water, yeast, and 1 tsp of sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.
    • Add the yeast mixture, warm milk, egg, and softened butter. Mix until combined.
    • Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. (Or use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5–7 minutes.)
  2. Let it rise:
    • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  3. Shape the pastries:
    • Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into small balls (about 2 inches in diameter).
    • Shape into desired forms: rolls, knots, or twists.
  4. Second rise:
    • Place the shaped pastries on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Cover with a cloth and let them rise for 30–40 minutes until puffed.
  5. Bake:
    • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Bake the pastries for 12–15 minutes or until golden brown.
  6. Coat with sugar:
    • Mix the sugar and cinnamon (if using) in a bowl.
    • Brush the warm pastries with melted butter and roll them in the sugar mixture.

Enjoy your soft, sugar-coated yeast dough pastries! Perfect with tea or coffee.
